Top 5 Payment gateways in India for Ecommerce Ventures

SHARE
Professionals associated with the E-commerce industry admit the fact that Payment Gateway is one the most crucial factors of their business. After all, gateway application service providers enable safe, secure and speedy online payments
The dilemma is that there many such service providers to select from. Which one is the best? More importantly, which one is best suitable for your venture in particular?
Fret not! Here’s a list of Top 5 Payment Gateways in India for Online E-commerce businesses (in no particular order). The list is compiled purely taking into account their market share, consumer base, industry experience, backing and big names associated with it.
Let’s dissect.

Payzippy

PayZippy is Flipkart’s very own Payment Gateway Service for Indian merchants. The company is treated as a separate entity headed by Flipkart Group. Their impressive clientele list, besides Flipkart, includes online players like Bluestone, Babyoye, Makemytrip, Lenskart, Caratlane, and Zansaar. They offer quick and convenient service that is PCI DSS certified.  With zero setup fees and annual maintenance cost (for now), Payzippy has been zooming ahead since its launch last year. With a brand like Flipkart backing it, this gateway has managed to create a lot of buzz in a short span of time
In this news report on Flipkart’s PayZippy published in Yourstory, Varun Bansal – Co-founder and CEO of the company said, “Flipkart has enabled e-commerce in India over the last six years. Throughout our journey we were always looking to build solutions that could empower the whole ecosystem and not just Flipkart. Flipkart’s Marketplace & Payzippy are the first two examples of this. This is an exciting beginning

PayU India

Owned by Naspers, PayU is a global company with its presence in countries like Hungary, Poland, Russia, South Africa and India among others. With an impressive 12% conversion rate coupled with noteworthy customer service, PayU has roped in biggies like Jabong and Snapdeal. The service provider offers four pricing packages, Risk Management System, Multi Currency Gateway, Mobile optimised payment page, IVR Payment, Store Card Feature and Payment Analytics. Zepo, one of India’s top platforms for start-ups has only good things to say about PayU. Therefore, it doesn’t come as a surprise that they also offer a free PayU gateway to people who sign up with them.

CC Avenue

CCAvenue undoubtedly is one of the biggest payment solution providers in India as nearly 85% of Indian e-commerce merchants avail their services. The key features includes 100+ payment options, Multiple Currency Processing, Retry Option, Customization, Audit & Analytics and large window for on boarders. If you already have a website, you can also integrate CCAvenue shopping cart for free.

Citrus Pay

Citrus is one of the top 3 payment gateway companies in India and the feat is worthy to be applauded, since it is only a 3 year old venture. Started by Satyen Kothari and Jitendra Gupta, their aim was to simplify online payment and make it quick & effective while following all safety protocols. Right from Emirates, Etihad, Airtel, Bagskart, Meru, Zivame, Esselworld, Kaya, PVR Cinemas, Healthkart, they all use Citrus Pay. They offer 3 packages, monthly charges for which are Rs. 7000 for Easy Starter, Rs. 10000 for Level Up, and Rs. 15000 for Power Packed.

Direcpay

An arm of Times of Money (Times Group), Direcpay seems to be a safe option. Their security system is PCI-DSS certified and Norton Secure. They also offer easy integration, registration and flexible payment process besides providing EMI options. It takes about 5 days to activate your account after the documents are verified by concerned authorities.
Now, let’s compare all five companies on similar grounds. Below is a table that has all the important features of each service provider listed down and allows you to judge at a glance.
Names of other players like Zaakpay and EBS did pop up, but negative customer reviews were just too many to ignore. One annoyed Zaakpay user wrote on their official Facebook page, “Pathetic services. I am sick of everything.I am stuck with Zaakpay for at least an year now. Definitely not recommended. (sic)” On the other hand, another customer wrote an Open Letter to EBS. Sigh!
After comparing, it looks like mid-sized and big companies looking for feasible option, Pay Zippy is good for them. The ones looking for reliable names, CCAvenue and DirecPay are worth considering. CitrusPay appears to be the best of the lot, bearing in mind that the company scaled up in just few years.
The abovementioned 5 names are Top Players but are they the best too, for all companies, however big or small? Because during our research it became quite clear that small merchants and lesser known brands often get a raw deal. We spoke to a seller (name withheld on request) who runs a small business and he shared his experience with Pay Zippy. He said, “They aren’t very considerate of small merchants. They force signups. They force your customers to sign up for Payzippy wallet. They took 60 days to make signing up optional. Their team did not take me seriously when I told them payments were failing, said, “The customer is changing the URL” for the first 45 days. Also require a lot of paperwork. I stopped using them, I use Instamojo instead now. Their offering is brilliantly flexible, and they are quick to address issues (sic)”
Good news for such companies is that there are gateway providers like InstamojoJuspay, and Zwitch. They might not figure in the top list but they offer technologically advanced features, excellent customer service and niche product as a whole. Innovative ventures like RedBus and Delivery Chef rely on the services of Juspay. Zwitch allows you to accept payments on your own page without any redirects, widgets and iframe. And as mentioned above by one seller, Instamojo has great customer service. The list can go on if we consider every new entrant in the gateway industry. But it will take a couple of years to draw any conclusion on their service standards.
